Conociendo a los pingüinos de Magallanes

El pingüino de Magallanes es un ave migratoria que durante el invierno, deja su hábitat para llegar hasta zonas más templadas donde pueda reproducirse y tener a sus pichones hasta que estos, se puedan valer por ellos mismos. Esta especie de pingüinos, mide entre 33 y 45 cm de alto y pesan cerca de 4 kg aproximadamente. Se alimentan de pequeños peces, así como de algunos crustáceos y moluscos. Gracias a unas glándulas que tienen tanto en el pico como cerca de la cola, segregan un aceite impermeable que los ayuda a regular la temperatura de sus cuerpos. Aunque es la única ave que no puede volar, la estructura de sus alas les permiten nadar velozmente y sus patas sirven como timón para desplazarse ágilmente por el agua y recorrer largas distancias.

Apenas los pingüinos llegan a las costas de la Patagonia Argentina, los machos que siempre llegan primero que las hembras, luchan entre ellos para encontrar a su pareja ideal. Los pingüinos son animales monógamos, por lo que la pareja que escogen, lo será por el resto de sus vidas. Después de reproducirse, las hembras ponen dos huevos en el mes de octubre y, alternándose con el macho, protegen sus nidos durante 40 días hasta que los pichones rompen el cascarón y continúan con su etapa de crecimiento y desarrollo mientras se mantienen resguardados en el nido. Luego de 2 meses y medio aproximadamente, los pichones ya están listos para ser independientes y finalmente en el mes de abril, terminan de mudar sus plumas para poder migrar y regresar al mar.

Por la cantidad de predadores que tienen los pingüinos en la tierra como gaviotas y zorros, sólo uno de los dos huevos que pone cada hembra, suele sobrevivir, y alrededor de un 1% del total de los huevos puestos en toda la colonia, logra llegar a la etapa adulta ya que en el mar, se encuentran otros grandes predadores como los elefantes marinos y las orcas. La vida de los pingüinos consiste en dos etapas, una donde van a las costas a reproducirse y sólo van al mar para alimentarse, y otra donde durante seis meses viven bajo del mar. Por eso es que los riesgos a los que se someten estas aves de ser atacados por un predador, es constante.
